Time 4 GDA – Glucose Disposal Agent
Glucose is the body’s preferred fuel. It comes from the breakdown of the carbohydrate we consume and is the predominant energy source for high intensity activities lasting from 30-seconds to approximately 90-120 seconds, such as performing a set of 8-20 repetitions of a resistance exercise at a high intensity, or 30 second maximal sprints.
Glucose disposal agents (GDAs) are substances that aid the uptake of glucose from the blood stream into the muscle tissue where it can be used immediately to fuel activity, or can be stored in the muscles and liver as Glycogen to provide energy when needed later. Glucose Disposal Agents (GDAs) increase muscle cells sensitivity to Insulin therefore reducing the need for high levels in the blood and helping to ensure that the carbohydrate we consume is used as fuel for activity, rather than stored as body fat, and so potentially enhancing performance, recovery, and body composition.
Using a Glucose Disposal Agent (GDA) can help to reduce the amount of glucose and insulin in the blood can provide many health benefits as sustained high levels are related to a variety of serious health problems.

QUESTION
I am interested in purchasing your Time 4 GDA Glucose Disposal Agent product, however when looking at the ingredients I noticed that it does not contain Alpha Lipoic Acid, which I have been told is a key ingredient in a Glucose Disposal Agent.
Is there a reason it does not contain Alpha Lipoic Acid?
REPLY
Thank you for dropping us a line about Time 4 GDA Glucose Disposal Agent. My name is Brian Batcheldor, I consult to Time 4 Nutrition on all matters relating to research and development. In the formulation of a Glucose Disposal Agent formula, there are a few questions we have to ask of ingredients, but there are at least as many hurdles to clear in getting a finished product out there. Of course, number one will always be safety, closely followed by efficacy. Financial viability and sustainability then enter the equation, this is where the wheels start to fall off for Alpha Lipoic Acid.
ALA can be a great addition, as you likely know, there is good research on its ability as a Glucose Disposal Agent, both in vitro and in vivo in animals and humans with type 2 diabetes. I believe it has a lot to offer in various forms of neuropathy and not just with diabetics, it’s a serious tool with early stage ischemic stroke victims too. However, the ALA used in most studies and that which we come across in the supplement industry are quite different materials. ALA found in most supplements is supposedly a blend of two isomers, R and S, it is supposed to be a 50:50 blend. This really matters because only the R isomer is the natural form as it exists in the body and with good bioavailability, it is also the isomer responsible for the reported antioxidant effects of ALA. It is the only form that functions as a cofactor in mitochondrial energy production. Unfortunately, R Lipoic acid is physically unstable at just above room temperature once separated from the S isomer, it deteriorates pretty rapidly during the supplement manufacturing process/encapsulation/tabletting, and you end up with reduced GI absorption and a bioavailability of less than 10%. Even when you blend the R and S (a by-product of chemical synthesis of the racemic ALA isomers, poor GI absorption means that as little as 20% reaches the plasma.
In 25 plus years in the industry, most of the material I see coming in from China is certainly a far cry from a 50:50 blend (normally around 80:20 S to R). The material used in most studies is intravenous racemic ALA or proprietary stabilized R isomer, both of which yield 20-40 times higher plasma levels. So why didn’t we seek out proprietary stabilized R Lipoic Acid? First would be safety, there are adverse reports of hypoglycemia from prediabetic and diabetic (Type 2) users, but also from those using in combination with other nutraceutical ingredients (e.g. chromium). There are also controls on this ingredient in countries like Canada, consideration is going on within the EU. However, when we considered efficacy, then our current blend certainly stood the test, as we looked at the multiple mechanisms involved in improving glucose disposal (e.g. reducing inflammation, AMPK, PKB/AKT, GLUT4 agonism, etc) and reviewed available scientifically validated ingredients for the purpose, producing a formula we feel ticked the box for most athletes and not simply those with reduced insulin sensitivity. I hope this has provided an answer for you, but please do not hesitate dropping me a line should you have any further questions.
